Shared Harvest CSA...
|
|
Shared Harvest is our Community Supported Agriculture group that marks 2006 as its fifth season this year. We purchase shares in a local organic farm, pay the farmer before the season so he has money to work with, and then reap the harvest from June to November with a weekly delivery of freshly picked organic vegetables delivered right here at FUSW for pickup late Tuesday afternoon. Any shares left over at the end of the day are donated to the Sharing Community in Yonkers. We also collect donations so that we can purchase at least one full share to guarantee that the Sharing Community will have a delivery each week.
Our veggies are personally grown for us by Farmer Dave and his amazing apprentices at Sisters Hill Farm, in Stanfordville, NY.
If you are interested in joining Shared Harvest CSA (either a full or a half share) or donating funds for our dedicated shares for the Sharing Community, please contact Janin Gunderman for more information. |

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) supports regional farmers by buying
shares in the upcoming harvest. The share price (hopefully) covers the cost
of growing and delivering produce and paying labor. In exchange, CSA members
receive a weekly supply of fresh produce direct from the farm. The produce
is delivered on a weekly basis to a neighborhood distribution site. CSA
members make a commitment to a particular farm or group of farms for the
entire season, which generally runs from Spring through early Fall.
At a time when farms are disappearing at an alarming rate, and some refer to family farms as an endangered species, Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) can offer the following benefits: * It provides regional farmers who practice sustainable agriculture a path to stability and profitability * It can give consumers from all economic backgrounds who are worried about pesticides, the possible dangers of genetically engineered foods, and other suspected health risks a healthy alternative source of fresh food * It helps to connect people with their food supply and the environment from which it comes
